Vice is like a very potent spice, a little goes a long way. Each of the aforementioned vices have degrees of severity – choose the least severe. Each of the vices require time – give a small amount. Each of the vices has negative effects on the body, mind and soul – show temperance.
A vice is a problem the first time it effects your schooling, your work, your honor, your integrity, your character, your family or your community. That means the first time you are too hung over to go to class – it’s a problem. The first time you are too hung over to go to work – it’s a problem. The first time you take time away from your wife to watch pornography on the internet – it’s a problem. The first time your gambling means you can’t pay your bills in full – it’s a problem.
Once you know you have a problem, your vice will be even more tempting. It is easier to entertain, stimulate or inebriate yourself than to admit to a problem and address it.
There is some shame in having a problem, there is far more shame in not addressing it. Only God is perfect. God made good and God made evil, both are below him and neither are perfect. Just as you were never perfectly good you are not perfectly evil, but small steps in the right direction will improve your status.
